BEES!

So the pic was hard to get but this is a 2.5" square clear plastic box. It is filled with Bees. Miyagi my dog is a voracious bug hunter and during carpenter bee season he kills approximately one a day. During Palmetto Bug Season he also brings me gifts that are less appreciated. Anyway, I sent the box of bees 100% anonymous to my friend Chris Hamer. I hope he learns to appreciate it! Here's what the facebook had to say about it:

I went and saw Amy Sedaris speak recently. She told us all about her book "Crafts for Poor People" or something like that. Sarah couldn't go so I had my friend Amy sign a plate for her! I really wish you could see my HORRIBLE crayola sweater that I wore. Many people asked sensible polite questions about her acting career, past performances, etc. I stuck with the topic of the book. I asked" So, if you are making things with glitter and it gets in your eye but you don;t have tweezers, what other common household item would you use to get the glitter out of your eye?" She replied "a needle, no, no! TAPE! Just hold your eye open and slap it on and the glitter will stick to it." Then I asked "As a follow-up to the same subject, if you hurt yourself reallly bad while crafting, should you call 911 and finish your craft while waiting or should you finish your craft and then call 911?" Her answer was "whatever it takes to finish it. You don't want half done crafts laying around your house. They'll never get finished then."
Amy is very smart.

The next few weeks are INSANE!
Work dinners, big staff meetings, GA National Fair on Saturday, maybe the Drive Invasion Sunday and then festivals out the wazoo! We have the L5P Halloween fest in 2 weeks on the 16th, then the Cabbagetown Chomp and Stomp on nov. 6th, the Athens Craftstravaganza on the 13th of November, and THEN the ICE show on the 20th and 21st. WHEW!
This coming weekend is the World Championship Bike Messenger Races and my boyfriend has friends from all over coming in.
I have to finish my Halloween costume AND I have to finish my Day of The Dead Artwork for the show at Youngblood on the 30th.

I'm gonna need a red bull.

Miyagi has already proven to be a stealthy bug killer. Now we are working on mice. I got some stuffed ones from IKEA and so far he has really taken to them. If I catch any more live ones I may give him a go in the back yard.

So, last night I began my linoleum block to print my madonna out. I will print it tonight and hopefully it will only need a few minor adjustments.

I also plan to do another piece but not until this one is completed and framed and ready to go!

Meet Third Half Studios

In the words of Lori and Sarah, “Everybody loves a Zombie squirrel!” And you know what? We couldn’t agree more. The two ladies are engineering and designing the kitschy Third Half Studios; Lori began as a traditional quilter and went under the business name of Sew Sew Def. When she joined forces with Sarah, they wanted a name that did not implicate just sewn items (or the famous Southern rap label). They chose "Third Half Studios" because, between the two, they have so much brains they had to keep the extra half in a jar. Or maybe between the two, they only have one and a half brain pieces. It's fuzzy math. But since we love crafty and cutesy things you can’t just find at Urban Outfitters, we wanted to get to know these fun-lovin' ladies a little bit better:

SCOUT: Tell us how might people know you?
L&S: Third Half Studios is made up of Lori Kishlar and Sarah Marks. We have a mix of hand-crafted as well as manufactured items emblazoned with our original designs. Our zombie forest animal melamine plates are the most popular item right now. Everybody loves a Zombie squirrel!

SCOUT: Describe Third Half Studios to someone who has never seen it?
L&S: Darling yet sinister graphic characters on a variety of items mixed with homespun craftiness. Old-fashioned crafts like your grandma would make...if your grandma was disturbed in some way.

SCOUT: My grandmother is luckily not too terribly disturbed. But does love Zombie Squirrels. Go figure. Tell us how you ladies met?
L&S: Two years ago Lori was invited to attend a secret craft society meeting. Sarah is the Master of Ceremonies for the local chapter. We hit it off and Lori was formally initiated in. We've been inseparable ever since.

SCOUT: That a super secret fairytale. Your designs are pretty eclectic. Tell us your personal faves?
L&S: Sarah likes everything: fabrics, housewares, light fixtures, jewelery, doorknobs. Everything. Lori just tags along. Lori likes the less wholesome items. She just made a sock monkey in tribute to the movie ”The Human Centipede” (Be warned if you watch the trailer.) Sarah is currently working on making some hilariously disturbing fabrics for Lori to incorporate into quilts.

SCOUT: Now that you have combined your crafty powers, what is your favorite project you have done together?
L&S: We both have the most fun brainstorming for themed art shows. There was a Star Wars inspired art show at the Highlander recently that was fun and the next that we are creating for is a Day of the Dead show coming up at Youngblood in the Highlands.

SCOUT: When you aren’t oozing creative juices, where in Atlanta to you go to escape & kick back?
L&S: Sarah loves going to the bookstore more than anything and sometimes she goes to the White Windmill Bakery to have fresh red bean buns and sketch. The rare times Lori goes out past bedtime she ends up in East Atlanta, usually Gravity Pub, or at a friend’s house. Both love going to kitschy places for roadtrips: Pasaquan, the Georgia Guidestones, Ave Maria Grotto…

SCOUT: Another local Atlantan that inspires you or your work?
L&S: There are so many: Chris Hamer of Urbnpop Studios, LoriGami, and Jay Hornsby, the Belligerent Monkey are a few that pop up immediately. Chris and Lorigami are great inspiration in that they actually are making a full-time living on their arts/crafts which is what we both are aiming for. Jay’s style is complimentary and we try to help each other out when one or the other can’t make it to a festival.

SCOUT: Where do you go to get new ideas?
Lori: Sleep.
Sarah: I don’t really have to go anywhere. Ideas fly around me constantly and hit me like a frying pan to the face. Real life for both of us is bizarre and inspirational.

SCOUT: Tell us your favorite “curious find” in Atlanta?
L&S: Buford Highway Flea Market ”Holiday Mall” is always an adventure. Everyone should go at least once! At least three stores sell accordions and there is a special photo-booth where they snap your picture and when it prints, you are holding hands with Jesus! One time a man asked me for money in the parking lot and when I said I didn’t have any, he cursed, removed his leg and angrily shook it at me.

SCOUT: What are you currently working on?
Day of the Dead show caskets and new products for upcoming holiday shows and festivals like the L5P Halloween Fest, the EAV Strut, and Indie Craft Experience (which we are currently applying for). We are also working with Netherworlds people on a special line for their gift shops.

SCOUT: Finally, throw out a shameless plug of where people can see your work?

Buford Dam

Two weeks ago, after a day of attempting to get to Lake Lanier and fish, we realized we were failing. So we drove over to the Buford Dam. Its soooo cool I wish I could be there today. See, the dam releases water from the bottom of the lake, which makes it super icy. The water running from the outlet stays so cold that it takes your breath away if you dare to put your feet in it. See Scott below, his feet turned blue! It also makes a steamy cool fog/mist and it's so lovely. Way out, in the center of the photo you can see a trout fisherman out there.

East Atlanta Strut!!!! tomorrow!

So tomorrow is the Strut. This is my favorite festival each year and now there's more exciting stuff going on. There is a mechanical bull which should be hilarious once people get really wasted. Then there is a circus- The Imperial Opa! Sarah and I are ready to party (and sell you zombie plates). come check out Third Half Studios. Our booth is between the EARL and Joe's coffee shop.

So I have a mouse problem. One day I walked into my craft room- where the magic happens- and I saw THREE mice jump off the couch and run under the attic door. Awwwww Helllll nawwwww. nope. We aren't having it. That nice i had nightmares and restless sleep and before work the very next morning I was at my local big box retailer buying death in boxes. I decided to do science and purchased a variety of traps. All shapes and sizes. Day 1 I went ahead and put the glue traps down. BOOM! Caught one. It was kinda pitiful and heartwrenching to see him squirm but oh well, its really his or her own fault. The next morning BOOM! A second one in the same glue trap! Time to toss that gross thing. Then I set the expensive "Kill and contain" trap. Now, this is a white box that promises to kill the mouse and keep it from my sight. I set it before bed and the next morning i had captured number 3! Of course if you see three then there are 100 so only 97 more to go. But wait...So the white plastic kill and contain box had a head sticking out of the tiny bait door. EWWWWW! THAT wasn't supposed to happen. oh well, he's dead. I reach down to use the convenient carry tab that was promised to me on the packaging...oh holy hell that thing is alive and the minute I touched the trap it was screaming and squealing and carrying on...i dropped it and ran. After catching my breath in the front yard I went back into the battle. I used a coat hanger to hook the trap and put it into an empty dog food bag. Mr. mouse was screaming the whole way downstairs, the dogs are jumping all over me like i have treats in the bag and we go outside. Now, i am pissed. I didn't buy the super expensive traps for THIS to happen. I dumped the trap out and took a picture and decided to push the release button and set him free. But then I discovered his poor little legs were paralyzed. Sigh...I was looking for a proper rock to put him down and then the neighbor Tony James comes out and asks what I was doing. "oh, just torturing a mouse"...and then here comes Mama. She's my outside kitty. she bats at the little mouse-who by this time is probably having a heart attack. Tony James sees this and exclaims "OH! Are they friends?" and at that EXACT moment Mama swoops in chomps on the mouse and carries it to the bushes for dinner. Good girl. Tony James...well, bless his heart. Of course I reused that trap and it was successful the next time.

I tried to make a cake recently. Well, like a month ago but i am a slacker at posting things on here. Anyway, my friend has a birthday next to mine so we make treats for each other. It makes people insanely jealous when you have a cake delivered and they don't.
So, I am no professional when it comes to baking. My treats taste good but they are ugly and I have only made about 2 successful cakes (i.e. no grand canyon down the center and no dogs getting a hold of them). Hey, I have an idea, lets try again! I know she likes carrot cake but I had a craving for chocolate. I also wanted to bring some treats to work if I was going to the effort. Soooo, why not make the cake half chocolate and half carrot cake with cream cheese icing? GENIUS! It was just a little wonky but once I drowned it in icing...well, it was still wonky. The tricky part was that I have no a/c. It was a hot hot August day and the icing was turning to soup. I would ice it, and throw it in the fridge, pull it out and write my saying, throw it in the fridge, add flowers...throw it...you get the point. I had no choice but to let her know it was ugly but not poisoned.

Sock Monkey Centipede

By now you must have seen the movie. The Human Centipede. Yes? No?!!!! Well go watch it immediately! No, don't. Well, yes, you should but only after reading the wikipedia review perhaps. Consider yourself warned.
These monkey babies were hand created and are filled with love, terror, horror, and a little regret. I love them so much. They are freshly surgically connected so they are still a little weak in the knees. Because of this i have created a stand with coat hangers soldered together and sprayed gold. But as you see, I am a genius, but not a metalsmith.
Each monkey was filled with cotton and fabric scraps. They have individual expressions of surprise, fear, and horror. Enjoy!

It's a tiny squirrel skull coffin

My friend Kseniya made this for me. It is the coolest item I have recieved this year (other than the dog bracelet from Olivia that her grandmother gave her that she didn't want). I haven't known her long but she is rad and even more rad is that she brought this to me for no reason other than i like skulls and she can make an awesome box that would hold the squirrel skull she was giving me. Thanks and i love it!

Day of the dead show coming up!

I was accepted to do a piece for the upcoming day of the dead show at Youngblood Gallery!
It will be held from October 30 through November 28 and I'm super stoked! I have purchased the coffins and now I will have 2 to decorate to my hearts content!!!! I have some pretty good ideas cooking in my head so we'll see what I can come up with!

Soldered jewelry

I took this class last Sunday and look at everything I made! The class was a one day event at the Spruill Center for the Arts here in Atlanta. They have all sorts of classes and range for 2 months to one day. Great place! Anyway, i made these awesome items! The first was the set with the reddish-orange pieces. Not bad. Then I did the clear glass piece with the tiny paper scenes on each side. Very fun. The other ladies in class mostly made floral, pretty items but I went with funny. Next was the heart that is made with 2 pieces of glass soldered together. Then in a quick flash i made the last 2 and my tecnique got better and better.

So I know most of these past blogs have just been crafty stuff. Well, get used to it because that is all I do these days. Well, i do some dog-sitting but overall I am not the wild woman my finances once allowed me to be.

Anyway, shown here is a lovely yeti print we made. I have perverted the idea, or made it awesome, your choice. I took a lovely 8.5 x 11 print and I hand pulled fur from my dog Eggroll Something Wong 5. See, she's puffy (see photo), and when she sheds it comes out in clumps. I brush and brush her and yet, each day, there are these clumps falling off of her. I would hand pull a few and immediately glue them to the print. She is white and black so the fur colors have some marbling. I need to take a picture so you can see just how puffy this little yeti is! You can buy it here if you really want.

Motley Crue Update

Remember when I showed you guys this Motley Crue Cross stitch? Well, This is the June update. I still have a long way to go but it is coming along!
So, a few weeks ago we had a table at the Rollergirls Event here in Atlanta. We had our table set up and Sarah was geeking out talking to a storm trooper. don't ask...Anyway, this guy is standing at the table next to ours and I asked "Is your name Johnny?" It was indeed. See Johnny used to come into my old work for some neighborhood meetings and he recognized me and we chatted. He's been doing some CNN i-reports among other things and then I had an epiphany! WOW! So i say "Sooooo, you're friends with Tommy Lee, right? Well, I have this Motley Crue cross stitch that is a to scale replica of the Shout at the Devil album..." and he had me email my progress. I plan to send him updates periodically too. Just knowing that Tommy may have seen it is AWESOME.

Postcard Swap

I recently participated in the Great Big Stitched Postcard Swap. I am retarded and either I missed the theme or I am blind, or both!
Look how beautiful the card i received is! It is hanging on my bulletin board at work right now!
The theme was apparently "time" but I just made a little monster. I was having issues with materials and inspiration so I'm sorry to whoever got mine. Also, was I supposed to mail it as a postcard or in an envelope for someone else to use? I always have received these things as postcards so when the lovely spot of tea showed up I instantly felt bad and thought i should re-do it. Now, looking at the examples I am embarrassed to put this on here but what the heck. mine is the ugly one that is second.

To Whom It May Concern:

First let me say I am a fan of Target Stores. I have almost always had a pleasant shopping experience (except for the final price after I am lured in by wonderful items). On June 5^th I changed my view, and I hope you can help this be a temporary ripple in an otherwise wonderful relationship.

On that Saturday night I met a friend at your Atlanta Midtown store located at 375 18th Street Northwest, Atlanta, GA 30363-1190. I went in and browsed until said friend arrived. We bought some candy, some snacks, and debated some other items but we would come back the next day for real shopping. We left in one car and went over to Atlantic Station for a bit. When we returned we noticed my car was missing and there was a tow truck in the process of removing another car. I looked around for a sign that had said no parking and it was TINY!

I understand that your lot is not a parking garage for the masses but I feel I was wronged. Most lots that actively tow have a very prominent sign. The average tow warning sign is 9x12 from what I have seen out and about. So, because the one teeny tiny sign was not obvious when the lot was full, I ended up spending all of Saturday night trying to locate my car, go home to get my registration, go to the tow company…My car was there only 2 hours past closing (not more that 3 hours total). So there I am, carless in a bad neighborhood. I feel if you are going to tow then you need much more prominent signs, and you need to wait a fair amount of time to activate the tow process. In fact, there have been many times we choose to meet at other Targets and leave one car there, and almost every time I spend money with you.

I have spent 1000’s, probably 10’s of 1000’s at your stores in my lifetime. I would like to continue to give my money to you. But right now I am so angry that I would rather shop at Walmart and the grocery store. How can you make us a team again? Well, you could give my 135 bucks back. I know you won’t do that since that money went to A-Tow. I’m not sure what kind of kick-backs they give you for the right to drag car after car out of there, but I’ll bet you can afford to give me a credit of $135 to spend at your store. That is how we can be friends again. $135 cash or $135 gift card. Until then I will go elsewhere for my toiletries, tank tops, socks, pet foods, gardening goods, etc. There are many other stores that are quite convenient for me to shop at.

Dad is the healthiest dude. He's fit and can outrun us all. So how does he get that way? Well, he eats right, he exercises, and he takes his vitamins! Check out the vitamins! I am not organized enough to remember to take them 3 times a day, I'm doing good to get one a day. But just so you know, dad can outrun all of us and he doesn't take any prescriptions. Beat that!

This past weekend I participated in the Art-B-Que in Avondale Estates. It was about a thousand degrees outside but was a lot of fun! So my next door neighbor was Chris Hamer These guys came to visit him and pick up a FANTASTIC commissioned piece. They have like 6 of his paintings. Anyway, they brought a present and it was the photo from the botanical gardens that you see. Its GORGEOUS! I love love love it and I said I wanted to buy one. They seemed a little hesitant but I insisted that I would email them about it. I don;t usually love photography at shows so it must REALLY speak to me. And this one did. Maybe it was the wonderful raised mat that really brought it out but I had to have one. Well, Sunday, here come Chris's fans again. And guess what?!!!! They brought one for me! Its about 16x20 framed and so wonderful! I can't decide if it will go in the living room or the dining room but it's going on the wall TONIGHT! See the picture I took of it. Sorry about the reflections, I'm not a pro.

Focus Group denial

I do these focus group studies sometimes and they usually net some serious cash. I was supposed to do one last night for 90 bucks. I answer the questions fairly honestly usually because I know they'll ask them again in some twisted way and I'm not quite devious enough to remember it all for the sake of getting to do a survey. The surveys are really pretty boring and usually about stuff that really doesn't matter to us- like cat food packaging. We spent 2 hours once discussing the cat change on the meow mix bag. I got to sit and drink 6 energy drinks one day (with a sloppy joe) to discuss if they were tasty and a good value. I have discussed cell phones, coke commercials, and TV pilots. Last night was supposed to be about Arbys and apparently when I had to take the survey on paper 2 weeks later my answers were a little off. Some circle talking lady just couldn't get it when I explained that sometimes I eat at a restaurant more than other times. and apparently it is a mortal sin to answer 2-3 times a month vs. 4-5. She made me made because she gibber-jabbered and kept talking in circles. I was like "what do you want me to put?" and she would start talking in a circle again until I snapped. I said "i don;t need this shit" and I left. She was still following me babbling in circles and I had to firmly tell her "I. Don't. CARE." anyway, they are fairly dumb and their sandwiches suck so I broke up with them in an email today:

Dear J**** Survey Group****,
I can’t continue this any longer.I am breaking up with you.Its not just last night either.I feel like this is becoming an abusive relationship and you are tearing at my spirit.You call and tease me acting like we’ll get together and say we will hang out and then you say no, I’m not good enough.You don’t trust me and you constantly ask the same questions over and over, without any clever disguise to make me wonder if you are really repeating yourself. Then, last night we got in an argument over Arby’s. Arby’s, really? You don’t trust my answers and while I really do eat at Arby’s you then question how often. Ridiculous. You thought you were treating me great but you really weren’t. The truth of it all is that I am too good for you and I really never want you to call me again.
Oh, and the circle talker lady who just kept going in circles last night, well she sucks. I’m sorry I don’t keep a chart of what I eat with me. I’m also sorry she doesn’t understand a single thing a person tries to say. I appreciate the opportunity to waste 3 hours of my life last night but I won’t be doing that again anytime soon. Not for you anyway.

She flipped 200,000 miles last night. Luckily it was on my street so she stayed that way all night! We may have a party for her this weekend!

Far East Motorworks (the best Honda mechanic in Atlanta) has a car that is the same 98 civic as mine but it is at 648,000 miles! Holy Moley! The owner brings it in once a month because he drives for a living. Usually it just needs an oil change but sometimes it gets the full service or a belt.

Last night I went to a party at my boss's house. Now, normally Halloween is anything goes, but at the boss's house I need to behave right? I decided tonight's Lady Gaga getup was inappropriate because well, it is. You can't go to the boss's house with no pants. So I decided to hit the old Halloween bin in the attic. I almost whipped out the super sober girl costume but it isn't as fun when super Drunk girl isn't there to battle with you. I thought about being a mummy but didn't have it in my to have my face covered much. The chicken was awesome, but it needs to hold out and maybe make a comeback in a year or so. That left a really good, comfortable option. Madonna. I got my lace gloves on and decked myself out in jewelry and teased my hair until it cried. This pic is from an 80's party Angee and i went to about 5 years ago but yes, I looked pretty much the same last night. You can't see the lace skirt with leggings and white socks and flats but they were there. Anyway, I get to the party and well, lots of people didn;t know who I was. Seriously? Thank GOD I wasn't Lady Gaga last night because the generation gap would have been even larger. Someone asked if I was Cruella since I had a jacket inspired by Desperately Seeking Susan. Sigh...I better stick with obvious things at the boss's next dress up party I guess.

Pete and Ashley's wedding quilt

This one was fun to do! I am trying not to buy new fabric unless I absolutely have to so it gives me more incentive to get crazy. This quilt has 4 different black fabrics in 6 inch squares making up the main body. Then i machine appliqued a variety of fabrics in polka dots. I used star wars fabrics, airplanes, fried chicken, playing cards, and lots of things with hearts. Along the edge is music notes, tattoo fabrics and more airplanes. I tried to capture items they both like and make it fun and bright even though it has a lot of black. The quilting was fun, i just did a meandering wave that zig-zags through the whole thing consistently. I think its looks very modern and whimsical yet not too sterile.

PS- sorry for the slacker photos but I couldn't find anywhere to hang it except for in front of the windows. One day I will finish painting and can hang curtain rods again and use those to hang quilts on for photos.

Another trip to Dr.Toe

Yep, it was time for another visit to Dr. Toe. My feet are so expensive! So today I got another shot in my toe knuckle. I cannot feel my feet as I write this-well, one foot. It was much the same as last week except this time he told me to ice 4 times a day. He better be glad its fall because there's no way i am icing my feet when it gets cold out. Anyway, on the other foot I had torn my nail off. It was a ragged jagged mess and I kept telling him not to look at it. Then he grabs this machine and a shop vac and goes to town on it! With a little cold spray he was able to grind that nubby bitch of a toenail down to a smooth polished stone. I swear it was a pedi-paw. it may not have had the pedi paw logo but it was the same concept. And by holding the shop vac up, it was debris free! My doctor is a genius. I am going to buy a pedi paw. But not for the dogs!

Oh Tang, you silly little man. I loved you. You were a good boy. You only peed on the furniture once and I totally forgive you for peeing in the car that time we went to the vet. Sure it took 6 months and 5 gallons of nature's miracle but you were worth it. You were the easiest cat to live with and you made my life better. Home will not be the same without you.

So I finished these two quilts this week. I rented the long-arm quilt machine at Ren Hen fabrics to work on my friend's wedding gift and when i finished ahead of schedule I was able to set these two up and quilt them. I got to use the new awesome machine and it goes much much faster. This allowed me time to get fancy and make puffy little clouds on the airplane quilt. I had a lot of fun and of course when I was almost to the end I decided to retrace the cloud bottoms to give them more oomph! It turned out really nice but required a lot of attention so i didn't zoom away.
The pink quilt is just using my regular meander than I love so much. One day I will have 12,000 spare dollars to buy a machine for myself. For now i will just keep the Ren Hen in business by renting theirs!

Another day, another trip to the foot doctor

This was going to be the last visit. I'm done. I've had my nail yanked out, pus drained and its like a real toenail! So this was going to be my breakup until I needed him in the future. Then i had to open my big mouth:
"so, is it bad if I sharp shooting pain periodically and irregularly in my bunion foot?" I told him how i stubbed my toe 4 times in one week during the great flood of 2009. I reassured him that the offending furniture was moved and there would be no more toe stubbing. He gave the foot a little rubdown and decided we needed some x-rays. I love x-rays even if they give me cancer. As he was about to walk out of the room he seemed like he forgot to ask something important. He turned and asked if my periods were regular. Yes they are. But what if they weren't? My mind was trying to figure out what that could possibly be the symptom of? Foot Cancer? Gout in my uterus? WHAT?!!!! I asked him what it meant if they weren't regular as I was trying to think of the horrible things that could have been wrong with me if my cycle was just that much "off". He answered "well, you could be pregnant". I slapped my forehead because I am SO STUPID!!!!! No x-rays for the pregnant ladies. Hahaha, I'm dumb. Anyway, my toe was not broken but i do have a deep contusion. This meant a needle. He sat down and the nurse assistant lady handed him a giant blue needle! Or a giant clear needle filled with blue fluid. Whatever, it was blue. And large. I asked for lots of cold spray because I love that stuff! He gave me the cold spray and then jabbed that needle deep into my big toe joint. It wasn't cortisone but it was a different something-osone like it and its like an epidural for my toe. I can't feel a thing in my toe and I won't for about 15 hours. I wonder how much this is going to cost. Oh, and the breakup was cancelled. I go back in a week.

Doggie for adoption! You all love Eggroll, well its like her long lost brother! He is extremely sweet and friendly, and freshly neutered. This dog is amazingly sweet, confident and is very emaciated. He is fully vaccinated and is about 40 pounds but he'll probably fill out like Eggroll (see below). He is 2-3 y...ears old. found in Hills Park, near Marietta Boulevard. He did test heartworm postive BUT the person who found him will pay for his treatment at AHS clinic if someone can just take him into their program.

Please let wittle13@yahoo.com know ASAP if you can help as she has nowhere to put the dog when she picks him up tomorrow. Heartworm was "faint" so they put him on 6 months preventive and will bring him to check, hopefully he will be free from worms by then! No microchip. The top 2 are the homeless pup and the bottom is his twin Eggroll (who is an awesome dog).

Day off!

So its the fiscal year end at work and we busted our butts to do a great job. Sooooo, the boss gave us the day off! Last night I had a headache from hell and went to sleep around 7:45. I woke up and made breakfast since I already got 12 hours of sleep and there was no need to "sleep in". First I put some bacon in a pan and then I accidentally dropped the spatula behind the oven. I climbed on the cabinet and tried to get the spatula with tongs and I realized how gross it was back there. so then I pulled the oven out and swept and picked up the spoon and stuff from back there. Then ooops, the oven was off because the plug is wonky. So after trying and trying I had to get scott up to help. We eventually duct taped the plug in and pretended its not a fire hazzard and finished cooking breakfast. Then we got back in bed and had breakfast in bed! So a painful start to a nice finale of cheesy scrambled eggs and bacon!

You can buy these tomorrow at the strut. The colors are very vibrant with lots of sparkly golds and shimmer paint. They are super rad! They are plaster of paris with oil base paint. Its very durable. Lots of clear coat to really seal them in. The one farthest to the left is mounted to a wood plaque with 3-d flowers. I have one drying at home that is similar but in an enclosed frame.

This dude is often out on the corner of moreland and Glenwood. He parks, sets up his display and sits there. all. day. long. His display is about 15 pairs of womens shoes, used. I cannot imagine wanting to stop for one of these pairs of shoes and I cannot imagine sitting there all day to try and sell a pair. Thats like 3 bucks a day max.

East Atlanta Strut

So the Strut is next weekend. Its an awesome good time and my favorite craft fair of the year! It was a rough start when they told me i wasn't accepted even though I was sharing a booth with Jay. Anyway, common sense prevailed after several complaints and I was allowed to proceed. Of course this was a couple of weeks later so I didn't plan accordingly and I've fallen short of my goal on items to make. Oh well, it will be fun anyway.
So, I have decided there are too many sewing crafts and that may be why I was rejected. I needed a new item to set me apart. Sure, no one makes quilts at these things but then again, no one buys the quilts either. They'll pay 100 bucks for a painting that took a day to make but a quilt that too a lot of time and effort for 100? No way they say. So, my new item is slightly mass produced. I learned to make molds! I asked my friend to show me how and she's awesome so I knew she would be a great teacher. Now, how much should I sell these magnets for? I'm thinking 5 bucks for bugs, 7 for cows and 8 for the chickens. Discuss.

I was maybe eight. We were up at the neighborhood pool having a grand old time but I had to pee. I wasn't lazy or gross so i actually ran down the street, past my mom washing the car, to go inside and use the toilet. I peeled my wet bathing suit off and sat down to do my business.
At the time we had this cat and we stored the litter box in the small downstairs bathroom. Well, I'm on the pot and i glance down at the litter box. Maybe i heard something, maybe not, but i looked down and What the...?!!!!! The poo was moving. And then it was flying! and it was trying to get me! I screamed and screamed and fell off the toilet trying to yank my wet bathing suit up while running with wet feet on slippery tile and it was in there and it hit my head and the high little girl screams echoed throughout the neighborhood! My mom was like a rocket and she came in ready to murder my attacker- thinking i was being brutalized by a big monster or pervert or bad neighborhood kid (or maybe my big sister was beating my butt). She was like lightening and I was hysterical. Where did he go she wanted to know but I could only point into the bathroom. She ran in, fists clenched and then it got out! It was in the living room and my mom assessed the situation and simply said "go get my tennis racket". Scurrying away and back she also asked for a wastebasket. There was a bat flying all over the living room in a panic, a mom ready to fight, and a little girl with her bathing suit half off. With one good swing she knocked that bat silly. We trapped it in the wastebasket and moved it to the cat carrier. Then we broke out the Golden book Encyclopedias and discovered it was a brown bat. Because he was not a vampire, we let him go at dusk and watched him fly into the night sky.
I was afraid of that bathroom for a long time after the incident but looking back its a hilarious "attack" by a bat that was probably more scared than i was!

My baby girl is all grown up. We thought she was "fixed" but apparently she is still broken. She went into heat last week and now i have to ride it out until she's done and we can have her spayed. Look how trampy she is in her hot pink panties. She wiggles out of them and they hang from her tail and she flaunts them in front of all the boys. They grow up so fast. Make sure to notice that I have taught her how important it is to accessorize properly! she matches!

Insurance...those sneaky jerks

In an effort to try and pass the bill to the next guy I got a letter from some group related to my insurance. They said it appears my claim is part of an accident or work related injury. Here is my reply:

Dear I___x,
Today I received your letter of concern over my well-being. Thanks! It feels good to know so many people care. I didn’t even think you would notice one or two little visits to the doctor. But then I noticed you were also under the belief that a third party could be held responsible for my foot affliction. Wow, I don’t know what to say. First, I’m not sure how you think an ingrown toenail could be from an accident or work injury. Curious. If that could happen I bet those people who milk the system would be doing home surgery constantly in an effort to get on disability. Secondly, if you really need to blame a third party, then I guess you could blame my mom for not noticing my shoes didn’t fit. I would say to blame me, but I don’t want to foot the bill. Ha! Get it? Foot? Anyway, I guess you could also blame both of my parents and perhaps grandparents for giving me a genetic makeup that makes my feet huge. While we’re at it, let’s get some money from the shoe companies that make painful shoes and don’t go up to size 11. It’s kind of neglect, right? But then maybe my feet are huge because of all the steroids in meat these days. Oh, we could go on all day. But overall, no, my toenail growing into the side of my foot is simply one of those things that happen and I don’t think we can get someone else to pay for it.

My job fixed my toe!

For years I've done home surgery on my ingrown toenails. I got them from too small shoes on my too giant feet and from smashing them and then picking. Don't pick! Anyway, the toe is almost totally better! Here's what the doctor does:

First he shoved a wooden stabby stick under the nail to drain the gore, then he sliced the length of nail with an x-acto scalpel thing. Then he got cut pliers and YANKED my nail out! I totally could have done that at home with some "cold spray" like they had. I told him I almost had the procedure perfected and he assured me that as soon as i got out of school and had a certificate showing it i could work there.

Its been a month! sorry dudes.

My feelings were so hurt by the raging river that i fell into a deep well of depression. BUT I have returned! Here is a snake to make you happy! Scott saw it in the street on his way home and he single handedly gathered a volunteer who prevented it from being crushed to death. Scott ran home and got some bins so we could take it to the creek. The silly snake decided to slither away slowly, risking life and lack of limb, but he eventually went to live in the kudzu. I estimate his length at about 6 feet or so. My extensive research tells me it is a grey rat snake.

Sunday we went kayaking. not in real kayaks but with those sit on top things. But we didn't get the fun wide sit on tops, we got the skinny ones that flip really easy. And yes, I ate it. Several times in fact! One time I got all tangled up and almost drowned, but not almost to the extent that I really almost drowned, just enough almost to make me be a baby for about 1 minute. Or 2. Anyway, when the boat flipped me, it also sacrificed some of my items to the water. I lost my shorts and my hat. Unfortunately my shorts had my 3 dollars, my credit card, and my driver's license. the loss of the 3 dollars was worst because halfway down the river some entrepreneurs had set up a grill and were selling hot dogs and hamburgers for 2 bucks. Man, I totally could have gone for one of those!
Later on we realized that the sunscreen did not work so well. and by not work so well, maybe not at all in some spots. My ankles are like red glowing beacons. they sizzle to the touch and are swollen like a 4th grade teacher's ankles. Cankles almost. They hurt. I had to take a half day monday because i couldn't move my knees or ankles and it was too comical to stay.
Yesterday I had to replaced my license. Really, the DMV on Candler road is like visiting a third world country. If you are wearing cuff links, on Tuesday, during the day, at the DMV, don't throw your trash on the floor. You want to think you're classy but really the girl in suspender shorts that cut up in her coochy is classier than you right at that point. 3 hours later i have ID!

Oh, and Solacaine is sent from heaven.

Fabric monster

This is only part of my fabric monster. In order to make a magical quilt, I have to dig through each and every bin just about. I have 2 more in the attic and 2 in the sewing room. These hold the big chunks, the trash bag is crap diana gave me, and the ones in the other rooms have small pieces. I haven't bought much in the past 6 months because I seriously need to thin the piles. Its threatening to overtake the stairs soon!

This dog lives behind me and is matted and hurting because her ears are torn up. She's a sweet girl that would respond well to love and discipline. She only barks because she's either hungry, thirsty, or her chain is twisted around a bush. I go out and untangle her and she settles right down. I bathed her in February and I'm pretty sure she had never been in a house before but she did well after the initial fear of the water. She gets along great with my two dogs and they lay against the fence wishing they could be together and play. Anyone want her?

MTV music awards

Did anyone watch these last night other than the twilight fans and myself and Olivia? We watched in disgust as award after award got handed to Twilight for a movie filled with subpar acting and shoddy directing. I could understand them getting a few awards but Bella was a horrible actress. In fact she's every bit as awkward in real life- fidgeting and playing with her hair. Ugh.
More disappointing was how the awards show has become even more of a giant commercial than ever. I used to be slightly commercialized but this year I heard a lot about 4th meal, t-mobile and kia cars. In fact, the new kia is perfect for rats. I learned tha from the commercials.
and why did they keep showing Cameron Diaz? Everyone they repeatedly showed had a movie coming out but her. Olivia and i tried to figure out a decent movie she's been in but we couldn't come up with one. Any thoughts?
To sum it up, the show was a trainwreck but i couldn;t quit watching.

Taxidermy Museum

On Roadside America I found this story about a taxidermy museum in Frankin NC. It was filllled with wonder and excitement. Mr. Three-fingers told us all about hunting in Africa and fishing in Costa Rica. He's named three fingers because a)I don't remember his name, b) someone called while we were there and asked for him by that description, and c) he only has 3 fingers. See, a while back he lost a couple of digits in a shark hunting incident involving a "boom-stick". So, Mr. 3F told us lots of interesting stories. He told us about the badger he saw on the side of the street. He wanted to pull the RV to a screeching halt. Instead he was forced to drive up to the next exit and loop around which took considerable time. Then he had to make the big sacrifice for the greater good. See, when you decide to taxidermy a roadkill it needs to be fresh and you have to hope there isn't a lot of bruising because that ruins the hide. Then you need to throw it into as deep of a freeze as you can as quickly as possible. So Mr. 3F was forced to eat a whole box of ice cream sandwiches in order to make space in the tiny freezer in the camper that they had hooked onto the truck. By the way, the badger was simply wonderful. He was black and white and looked sort of like an exotic raccoon!
At the museum I also met a jackalope. He wanted to come home with me but i just didn;t love his nose. It should be soft and pink but this one was a bit too pinched and it was black. While I love a black dog nose, this jackalope was not the one for me.

Asheville pt.1

So, I went to Asheville 2 weekends ago. It was part vacay and part family trip. My sister got married and I went to visit a friend for a day and a half before the event.
I arrived on Thursday evening and we took this silly funny comedy bus tour called LaZoom through Asheville. It was cute and at 11 bucks each (its usually 22 but we had a buy one get one deal) it was worth it just to catch this picture of a man-nun chasing us on a tall bike! You can bring beer and wine on board!
We also saw a ghost!

So the next morning we got up early and drove along the blue ridge Parkway. We drove through mountain tunnels and saw a wild turkey! Its cool how obviously the landscape and environment changes when you go up in elevation like that. When we stopped to see this waterfall we also saw some cool slime molds! Theses yellow mushroomy things are only about an inch out of the water. YUCK! We continued on our way towards our next destination: The Taxidermy Museum! Stay tuned for a blog on that next!

Last night I picked Turkey up from the vet. She apparently did not have fun and was terrified. When the manager tried to get her out of the run she wouldn't budge so her went to scoop her up. Well, her terror made her do some self-expression of the glands all of over him. He brought her out and i smelled it right away! When he came back with Eggroll I asked if she needed her glands expressed and he politely said "they've been expressed" and I was like "oh, was there a problem?" and he calmly said no, she was scared and expressed then quite clearly to me just now. I apologized to him and then patted turkey on the head "oh good girl, you saved mommy 20 bucks!!!"

Poor guy. Butt juice smells like a dead fish in a plastic bag in my truck in the summer.

Oh, and turkey got a bath.

Okay, I know its a fashion store, but I saw this sign outside of Bebe sport. First, this chic is jogging with a bag and a jacket. Second, she's jogging in gold lame underwear. That can;t be comfortable, safe, or fun for her. This sign makes me want to burn that store down.

I recently lost half my index finger in a an accident with my lawn mower. I have it in the freezer if anyone wants it. It is mostly intact. I put it in the freezer the day I lost it after I found out I wouldn't be able to have it reattached (due to medical cost, verrrry expensive) so it was freshly frozen. The detachment point was just above the second knuckle. I have been saving it for a while but I have finally decided that I am ready to let go of it but I cannot bring myself to just throw it away. If you are interested please email me why you want it. I am not going to give it to you if you just plan on giving it to your dog, for instance.

Bag o hair

One day i was driving home from work and I thought there was a bag of dead puppy in the road. Luckily someone just lost their hair. It was still there the next morning so i was able to snap a picture of it.

So this past weekend I got to go to a slumber party! Melissa was celebrating the Twilight DVD release and she kicked her boyfriend out for the night and invited her closest 8 girlfriends! Its too bad my camera battery died. I only have pics of us doing each other's makeup and nails and eating cookies and brownies. I didn't get any pictures of the pillow fights in our tiny nighties or when we did skin treatments and then showered together.

Oh, and yes Scott said "really?!!!" when I told him thats what we did.

Anyway, the movie is okay, and definitely watchable on DVD but I think Melissa is crazy for watching it 9 times in the theater and who knows how many times at home. She's writing a dissertation on it and apparently she'll talk about mormons and how they relate. Go get em! Knock'em dead(ish).

Woodpecker

Apparently Turkey and Eggroll caught a red bellied woodpecker today. I didn't get to see it but Scott said they hurt it's wing. The bird was gone when i got home so i hope he recovered from his brush with death.

Spring has sprung!

Spring is here and with Spring come cute clothes. Well, sometimes. Old Navy gets more and more like K-mart each time I go in. Usually their clothes fit poorly and often if they do fit they won;t after a wash. So, now I'm deathly afraid of the green shorts that will plague us all. I know girls will be wearing these unfortunate things with their unfortunate uggs and strapless tube tops over a t-shirt any day now. Brace yourselves, this is your warning.

Today is my last day at Tech. Its been 6 and a half weeks here that have gotten a little better over time but I'm still pleased to go. I look forward to my new career and the endless possibilities of looking cute and learning awesome skills.
Before I go I must make sure no one lost this earring. It moves around from bulletin board to bulletin board. It stays on the 3rd floor of the architecture building but it does migrate.
Also, I wanted to remind you all to join the chair in the Elevator Club. This is not exclusive to GA Tech and chapters are popping up all over the place!

So, I think the things I will miss most about my 6 and a half weeks here are the lunches with my best lunch buddy. So often people turn you down for lunches by stating they brought their lunch or they don't have money. Not Wendy. She would bring her lunch and sit with me for good conversation and acceptable food. Thanks for the good times Wendy. If you go for any lunch buddy interviews I will be glad to provide a reference!
I also think the campus in the spring would be way more awesome than those bleak months where I had to walk miles from visitor parking and struggle to figure out where anything was. Yes, with spring upon us its easier to forget those hard times but I'm sure Decatur will be way better in Spring. Even without Wendy.

Eggroll is weady to wok!

Eggroll went to the vet this weekend. She had rice coming out of her butthole and any animal owner should know that this means tapeworms. So I finally wrangled her and got her in the car. She was very unhappy in her harness and more so in the car. She got used to it but once we got to the vet she tried to hide in the back window. Then she tried to throw a fit and spaz out so she was carried into the vet.
Once inside she was great. Nervous but very well behaved. She got pricked, prodded, anally violated, and not once did she growl or show any aggression. They even stood her on her hind legs and shave her lower belly looking to see if she had been spayed. You would think buzzy clippers to her belly would make her squirm but no, she just looked quizzically at the vet like "what is this weird thing you are doing?"
I did find out she has heartworms so we have to prepare for that. This means she will get 2 or 3 shots of arsenic. This kills the worms and then I will need to keep her calm and not let her heartrate elevate. If she starts playing too much then too many dead worms can pass out of her heart and into her system and kill her. Otherwise her checkup was pretty good!

Oscars party

So I know I've been behind in updates but give me a break.
Anway, I recently went to an Oscars party. I have my mother to thank for my exquisite fur collection. I had 2 minks to choose from and I went with the chain of minks for this occasion. I just love how grossed out the vegetarians were. I fed my furry little friend a pig in a blanket and I thought Angee would just die right there.
What you cannot see is that my gown is floor length and my hasty sewing job did not help. The straps were constantly falling off my shoulders and exposing my foundation garments. Regardless, it was a good time even thought the only part of the Oscars that I saw was some Indian dance from that Slumdog Millionaire movie.

Recently I went to our lay-off dinner. That's where a group of us get together every few weeks and enjoy a meal with friends who used to be coworkers. Only those who were laid off are invited but sometimes we invite others that know we were awesome and they should have kept us. Yes, only one or two others joins us.
Anyway, we went to Manuel's tavern. My friend love love loves that place. The food's decent but its not worth all the trips she makes me take there. And you would think she would get tired of it since its right across the street from her. But I digress-what I want to ask is "why so much ketchup?" They really provide an obscene amoutn of ketchup on each table. 3 bottles. THREE. I really can't imagine the table using one whole battle in a day, much less three! Additionally, i think ketchup is gross. Actually its Gross with a capital G.

Snow fun

So we had a snow day the other day but of course it was a Sunday. I woke and it was like 60 degrees outside and rainy. The weatherman had said snow but I'm always doubtful as this is Georgia. Then the temperature dropped and the rain turned to snow. I brought Eggroll inside and I decided it was a good day to lay in bed and read all day. I didn't really think it would stick but a short while later it was coming down! I waited until there was a nice covering in the yard and let the dogs out. At first they were like "no way!" but then they realized it wouldn't hurt them. Turkey loves eggroll so much that she didn;t care that her paws were wet from the slushy snow. Then she decided to stand in the cold lake that my backyard was becoming.

One of the big bummers about Georgia is the snow people. There is always a valiant effort made, but they usually suck. People have to scrape and shave the ground of all of its snow in order to create the big snowball. So what results is usually a rock hard ball of ice with grass, dirt and pinestraw all mixed in. Then of course the next day it is 65 degrees again so it all melts away as fast as it appeared. But thats okay because i'm ready for Spring!

Valentines Day

So, I've never been huge on the hoopla of Valentine's day. I think it should be a celebration of love all around, not worship the woman day. Scott took me to eat Chinese at my super fave restaurant Happy Valley on Jimmy Carter Blvd. I almost exploded! We also went to the Hong Kong market next door and stocked up on awesome items for foodfest 2009. Foodfest 2009 is where I decided to cook. It doesn't happen often, but this time it was an all day affair! I started by making Basil shrimp rolls. Mmmm, with the sweet chili sauce...to die for! Next I made spring rolls, the fried ones. I used the whole pack of wrappers. I made about 24 and then froze some of them so now I can make them anytime! I served these with a hoisin sauce. Oh, and if you squash some oreos up with cream cheese and wrap it up like a spring roll, and then fry it, this is a super delicious treat! Next we had chicken coconut milk soup. Soooo easy and so delicious! I just had my leftovers for lunch. The last course i made was fish cakes. These are a spicy fried cake like a crab cake, but better. And the sweet cucumber dipping sauce accents it perfect! Oh my god i ate so much even though I was trying to eat small portions. To top off the evening Scott made lobster (and snails but we don't talk about that). Needless to say, the way to a mans heart is through his stomach so now he loves me even more!

Lunchtime ride

Today at lunch I went to eat with my friend. He was able to procure a cart for us so we wouldn't have to walk. You know how I hate to move. Anyway, it was soooo much fun! We jumped curbs, we zipped around students, we even took it and parked at the restaurant we went to. It TOTALLY made my day!

See the white dog? That's Egg Roll. she ate an egg roll out of my hand one day and she is cute and timid. I am trying to catch her so she can be liberated from the street life and either i will keep her or i will find a home for her. Right now she is captured in a girls yard. She's too scared to let me touch her but she's contained. Turkey and I are going over to play today!

This is Lanie's New Years Eve dress. It was her last outfit and it looked fantastic! i didn;t get enough pictures of it but it was a little off the shoulder with a 1.5 to 2 inch scrunch at the top in crushed silver and a 3 inch scrunch at the bottom framing a black velvet bodice. It was fastened with velcro and was quite slimming! Of course, spleen removal is slimming too. Scott hopes i don;t start dressing Turkey, but really turkey doesn't have an eighth of the fashion sense that Lanie had.

My new job

So I've been here for 2 weeks. Its a little better than the beginning but I'm not in love. You can tell when you're in love with your job when you make it there on time and you actually kinda look forward to being there. Whether its the people or the actual work, it just isn't so hard to be there if you love it. Sure there are times where you might be on a downswing with your work but it turns around and you find your joy again. I wish I didn't dread getting up in the mornings. At lunch its like there are rockets attached to my feet. These rockets bring me nowhere but out the door to wander around and find a place to sit and watch the time tick by until I have to go back 1 hour later. Last Friday I made one label. Sure I answered some phone calls but overall I made one label. It looked fantastic though! Even perfect. Today I made about 15 labels. Maybe 18. But the excitement was looking each address up. What a fun game! Sigh...thank goodness its FRIDAY!!!!!!!!

Lanie came home last night and we snuggled and she ate a hearty meal. Then this morning she was cool and she ate a bit but then threw up. I called the vet and they said bring her in so I went to get her to the car and she collapsed. i rushed her to the vet and she's there now. Kiss you doggies and kitties for luck!

Lanie had another procedure just before Christmas and they opened her up like a present and took the wound out and then re-did her. She had stitches until today . YAY for her side healing! So I took her to the regular vet to show her off and let them know she was good and just had a bit of depression. I also mentioned that because she was depressed she was hardly eating and only walks and car rides brought her joy. Well, Dr. Miller looked at her gums, said they were pale and ran a couple of tests. So today I was all excited and then learned she has a mass in her belly, most likely her spleen. She had x-rays, an ultrasound, a blood transfusion and is currently in surgery. Cross your fingers for my dog baby!

Update! As of 8 she is doing great, waking up from surgery. She's now spleenless and the vet said he'd email pics. a normal spleen would have weighed about a pound but hers was 6 pounds! Learn more here

I made this for Scott's parents for Christmas. The colorful side is all fabrics from my trip to Singapore. The other side has a batik panel from Singapore and the blues were chosen to match their house. I was trying to make his mom cry but she must not have felt quite that emotional. She was close though I think!
